چکیده

Introduction and large scale production of synthetic halogenated organic chemicals over the last 50 years has resulted in a group of contaminants which tend to persist in the environment and resist both biotic and abiotic degradation. The low solubility of these types of contaminants, along with their toxicity and tendency to accumulate in food chains, make them particularly relevant targets for remediation activities. Although the processes involved in dechlorination of many of these organic compounds are well understood in the fields of chemistry and microbiology, technological applications of these processes to environmental remediation are relatively new-particularly at pilot or field scale. It is well established, however, that there are several mechanisms which result in dehalogenation of some classes of organic contaminants, often rendering them less offensive environmentally. These include: stimulation of metabolic sequences through introduction of electron donor and acceptor combinations; addition of nutrients to meet the needs of dehalogenating microorganisms; possible use of engineered micro-organisms; and use of enzyme systems capable of catalyzing reductive dehalogenation. The current state of research and development in the area of reductive dehalogenation is discussed along with possible technological applications of relevant processes and mechanisms to the remediation of soil and ground water contaminated with chlorinated organics. In addition, an overview of research needs is suggested which might be of interest for development of in situ systems to reduce the mass of halogenated organic contaminants in soil and ground water.

pH control for enhanced reductive bioremediation of chlorinated solvent source zones.

Enhanced reductive dehalogenation is an attractive treatment technology for in situ remediation of chlorinated solvent DNAPL source areas. Reductive dehalogenation is an acid-forming process with hydrochloric acid and also organic acids from fermentation of the electron donors typically building up in the source zone during remediation. This can lead to groundwater acidification thereby inhibit...

Risk assessment of hazardous impacts on urbanization and industrialization activities based upon toxic substances

A risk assessment study was conducted to predict the expected hazardous influence on the ecosystem resulted from urbanization and industrialization activities at Helwan area, Egypt. To achieve these goals, soils, plants and water samples were collected from Helwan area, and their total concentrations of inorganic contaminants (Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) and organic pollutants; such...

Comparison of trichloroethylene reductive dehalogenation by microbial communities stimulated on silicon-based organic compounds as slow-release anaerobic substrates.

Microcosm studies were conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of tetrabutoxysilane (TBOS) as a slow-release anaerobic substrate to promote reductive dehalogenation of trichloroethylene (TCE). The abiotic hydrolysis of TBOS and tetrakis(2-ethylbutoxy)silane (TKEBS), and the biotic transformations of the hydrolysis products from both were also investigated. Comparison of TCE reductive dehalog...

Sorption, degradation and leaching of pesticides in soils amended with organic matter: A review

The use of pesticides in modern agriculture is unavoidable because they are required to control weeds. Pesticides are poisonous; hence, they are dangerous if misused. Understanding the fate of pesticides will be useful to use them safely. Therefore, contaminations of water and soil resources could be avoided. The fates of pesticides in soils are influenced by their sorption, decomposition and m...
